Design Table 4-1 — Gland Design, O-Ring and Other Elastomeric Seals (SAE AS5857)

This table reproduces Design Table 4-1 from the Parker O-Ring Handbook (“ORD 5700”), covering gland design dimensions for O-ring and other elastomeric seals per SAE AS5857. It spans the full AS568 dash-number range (0XX, 1XX, 2XX, 3XX and 4XX series).

Use the search box to filter by dash number. All dimensions are in inches. Each dash number lists maximum and minimum limits for every gland feature.

* These designs require considerable installation stretch. If assembly breakage is incurred, use a compound having higher elongation or use a two-piece piston.    This groove width does not permit the use of Parbak® rings. For pressures above 103.5 bar (1500 psi), consult Design Chart 4-2 for groove widths where back-up rings must be used.

(a) Clearance (extrusion gap) must be held to a minimum consistent with design requirements for temperature range variation.

(b) Total indicator reading between groove and adjacent bearing surface.

(c) Reduce maximum diametral clearance 50% when using silicone or fluorosilicone O-rings.

(d) For ease of assembly, when Parbaks are used, gland depth may be increased up to 5%.

Column Definitions
Gland Dimension Columns — Design Table 4-1
Column Symbol Description Limits
AS568 Dash No.Standard AS568 dash number identifying the O-ring size. Unique identifier for each gland row.
CCPiston or Cylinder OD — the outside diameter of the piston (male) member.Max / Min
AACylinder Bore ID — the bore that the gland seals within.Max / Min
FFGland OD — the outside diameter of the gland groove.Max / Min
BBRod or Gland Sleeve OD — the rod (or sleeve) outside diameter.Max / Min
HHRod Bore ID — the rod bore inside diameter.Max / Min
EEGland ID — the inside diameter of the gland groove.Max / Min

Cross-section series: The first digit of the dash number encodes the nominal O-ring cross-section diameter (cs):

  • 2XX — 0.103″ cs, G† = 0.140″
  • 3XX — 0.139″ cs, G† = 0.187″
  • 4XX — 0.210″ cs, G† = 0.281″
  • 5XX — 0.275″ cs, G† = 0.375″

Remaining digits encode the O-ring inner diameter in a systematic sequence. The full dash number (e.g., 3-214) is the standard way to specify a Parker O-ring for procurement.
