Design Chart — O-Ring Face Seal Glands

This tool references and improves the functionality of Design Chart 4-3 from the Parker O-Ring Handbook (“ORD 5700”), which gives gland dimensions intended primarily for face-type O-ring seals and low-temperature applications. Pick a cross-section size to load its gland depth, squeeze, groove width and groove radius; all dimensions are in inches.

A face seal groove is dimensioned by its diameter and width rather than by bore/plug diameters. Use the Groove Diameter Calculator below to size the groove O.D. (HD) for internal pressure or the groove I.D. (H) for external pressure from the O-ring mean diameter.

These dimensions are intended primarily for face-type O-ring seals and low-temperature applications. Squeeze is the O-ring cross-section W minus the gland depth L. Surface finish X: 32µin RMS for liquids, 16µin RMS for vacuum and gases. Break corners approx. .005 radius; gland side angle 0° to 5°.
