Basis

MIL-HDBK-5 publishes allowables on three statistical bases. A-basis is the value exceeded by 99% of the population with 95% confidence, and is used where failure of a single element would lose the structure. B-basis is exceeded by 90% with 95% confidence, and applies to redundant structure where load redistributes on failure. S-basis is the minimum value from the governing material specification, with no statistical statement attached.

Grain direction

Wrought products are anisotropic. L runs along the rolling or extrusion direction, LT across it in the plane of the product, and ST through the thickness. ST values are typically the lowest and are only published where the section is thick enough to test. Where the handbook prints no value for a grain direction, the lookup shows rather than substituting a neighbouring value.

Bearing allowables

Fbru and Fbry are tabulated at edge-distance ratios of e/D = 1.5 and e/D = 2.0, and are dry-pin values per MIL-HDBK-5 Section 1.4.7.1. Lubricated joints and other e/D ratios need the correction called out there.

Units

Stresses are in ksi, moduli in 103 ksi (msi), elongation in percent, and density in lb/in.3 — exactly as printed in the handbook, with no unit conversion applied.

Every value on this page is transcribed from a MIL-HDBK-5 design mechanical and physical properties table. The lookup does not interpolate between thickness bands, average across tempers, or synthesise a value the handbook does not publish — if a condition is not in the table, it is not in the result. Each result names its source table and links to both the transcribed table on the relevant chapter page and the corresponding page of the handbook itself.

MIL-HDBK-5 was superseded by MMPDS for new design work. It remains the governing document for a great deal of legacy hardware, and it is public domain, which MMPDS is not. Check which document your program requires before using these numbers in a stress report.

Roadmap

This page currently covers room-temperature allowables. The following build on figure digitization that is still in progress, and will be wired into this same lookup as each chapter is finished:

  • Temperature knockdown — the percentage-of-room-temperature curves in each section's Figure x.x.x.0 series, applied to the selected condition for a chosen service temperature.
  • Exposure knockdown — the effect-of-exposure curves, for a given exposure temperature and time at temperature.
  • Tangent modulus — pulling the digitized stress-strain and tangent-modulus curves for the selected condition, which is what a column buckling or crippling check needs.
  • Remaining chapters — titanium, nickel and heat-resistant alloys, plus the tables in the already-published chapters whose layout the extractor does not yet handle.
